  4. Almost ready for the Underwater Photography World Championship in Tenerife

Almost ready for the Underwater Photography World Championship in Tenerife

I'm almost ready for it ... at least I think so. Tomorrow I am leaving to Tenerife with my buddy Ron Offermans to participate in the Underwater Photography World Championship. We first planned a few practice days to explore the conditions in Tenerife. The World Championship starts on Tuesday, September 17. Exciting again!

CMAS Underwater Photo and Video World Championship

Teams from 21 countries will participate in the World Championship this year. Three teams from the Netherlands will travel to Tenerife. René Weterings and I (Marco Heesbeen) participate in the photography championship with our own buddy. Ronald Faber will compete with his buddy for the most beautiful underwater video in the videocompetition. The participants in the Underwater Photography World Championship take photos in 5 different categories:

    • Fish
    • Close up
    • Theme: this year Cartilaginous fish
    • Wide angle with diver / model
    • Wide angle

I have studied the strict rules. Violation of a small rule can already result in a disqualification.

  7. Shooting this fish portrait

    Shooting this fish portrait

Shooting a fish portrait is often a matter of patience. And arm cramps...

    Location
This photo was taken at Swanee Rock in the sea of Cortez in Mexico, also called the Gulf of California. It was my entry for the fish portrait category in the CMAS world championship underwater photography 2017 in La Paz. The blenny is a very small fish: the head is only a few millimeters wide. Nevertheless, it is very photogenic and colorful. Very occasionally it opens its mouth for a fraction of a second, so you get to see the bright red inside. Exactly that moment I wanted to capture. The sight during the dive was not great, a little milky, but fine for macro and close-up shots. There was little flow at this depth of up to 10 meters.

    Camera
Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II (micro 4/3 sensor), 60mm macro lens, Nauticam underwater housing with a flat port and 2 INON Z-240 strobes with a Flipsnoot Pro (a snoot is a tube that you put on the strobe to reduce the angle of light, you can fold it away when not needed).

  8. Using a wide-angle lens under water. This is why!

Using a wide-angle lens under water. This is why!

Many underwater photographers use a wide-angle lens on their camera. There are wet wide-angle lenses that can be placed on an underwater housing. There are also wide-angle lenses for your camera. A different port on the underwater housing is required for these cameras. Why a wide-angle lens? Let's explain it.

A general rule for underwater photography is: "Get close to your subject!".
Less water between the lens and the subject results in less backscatter on your photo. Your flashes are closer also. More color and contrast in your photos! But what about a larger subject? Normally, above water, you would have to take some distance for an overview photo.  You can solve this problem with a wide-angle lens. Or even more extreme: with a fisheye lens.

With a wide-angle lens you can photograh a larger subject from a short distance. You have less water between the lens and the subject. Resulting in less backscatter on your photos. Your photos are also more bright, because you can highlight the

  9. How to adjust white balance on Olympus Tough camera

How to adjust white balance on Olympus Tough camera

Of course you can use the program mode under water and for macro or wide angle, when diving or snorkeling with an Olympus Tough. You can also simply fine-tune the white balance yourself.

Set the camera to P or A to adjust the white balance yourself. With a click on OK you open the menu on the right and bottom. Then select the white balance icon. If you choose "white balance with one key", you can register a white balance yourself by pressing the INFO button. You aim the camera on a white or gray subject (white balance card, white or light dive tank, white / gray sand / dead coral) and press the release button. Satisfied with the result? Then choose yes to save this white balance.

Another way to adjust the white balance is the CWB function. With this Custom White Balance, you can choose a color temperature again with the INFO button. The higher the value, the more "warmer" your photo becomes. You will get more yellow and red tones in your photo. If you choose a low value (eg 4000K), your
